You can do it at home

A common misconception is that silk must be dry-cleaned. Not so. Follow these simple instructions to care for your silk garments at home.

Hand-wash gently with cold water and a few drops of natural soap, shampoo or gentle detergent.

Do not bleach.

Dry flat.

Dry-clean as needed.

Travel Tip

Roll your silk garments to minimize wrinkles and creases.

If your silk garment is wrinkled or creased after spending time in your luggage, hang it up in the closet overnight and the wrinkles will go away.

Alternatively, after taking a hot shower, hang the garment in the bathroom and allow the steam to remove the wrinkles.

Detailed Instructions

Washing:

  • Fill a clean sink, wash basin or large bowl with cold to luke warm water.
  • Add a few drops of your desired cleaning agent. You may also add one tablespoon of white vinegar which is shown to prevent color loss.
  • Agitate the water until suds form.
  • Submerge your garment in the soapy water and rub stained areas gently. Avoid wringing or twisting the garment as this may weaken the silk fibers.
  • Let soak for 3-5 minutes
  • Disgard the soapy water and rinse garment under cold water until all the soap is removed. Squeeze gently to remove any excess water. Again, avoid wringing the garment harshly.

Drying and Ironing:

  • Place the garment on a large towel and press dry.
  • While the garment is still damp, iron the garment on the reverse side using the silk or medium setting on your iron.
  • If the garment has already dried, use a water spritzer or mister to re-dampen the garment before ironing.
